Cruise Ship Voyage Alerts for GI Illness

Disease Strategies developed the color-coded Cruising Healthy Voyage Alert system for GI Illness on cruise ships under the direction of Frank McAllan, MPH. Disease Strategies is an independent company, not affiliated with the CDC Vessel Sanitation Program, and the CDC neither approves nor sets the criteria for Cruising Healthy Voyage Alerts. However, all gastrointestinal illness data and ship information is provided by the VSP to Disease Strategies on a periodic basis.

Cruise Ship Voyage Outbreak Alert for GI Illness Basic Common

The Vessel Sanitation Program considers any cruise ship voyage that meets or exceeds 3% of the crew OR passenger population to be a "formal" GI Illness outbreak. And, according to CDC regulations, anytime this percentage criteria is met, it should be announced as an outbreak on the VSP website. The 3% is an arbitrary threshold defined by the VSP, and has no upper limit.

  • Voyage that terminate (disembark) in non-U.S. ports
  • Same day voyages (those without an overnight stay).
  • Voyages lasting more than 21 days if the CDC does not report them in their database.
