This chart describes the incidence of Gastrointestinal Illness (GI) in a U.S. port for the stated calendar year. The annual average percentage rate of gastrointestinal disease of the port is calculated by utilizing cruise ship 'self-reported' voyage data from the Centers for Disease Control. Ships are required to provide this information when one or more segments of the voyage 'touches' a U.S. controlled port.

NOTE: The CDC VSP halted origin and destination port reporting for cruise ship outbreaks during 2006. The question is why the CDC suddenly considers port information confidential and no longer important to the general public? Your guess is as good as mine!

Cruise ship data excluded from these studies:

  • Voyages with less than 20 passengers.
  • Voyage that terminate (disembark) in non-U.S. ports
  • Same day voyages (those without an overnight stay).

Complete Data Period: 2001-0101 to 2008-0119
Outbreak Data Period: 2001-0101 to 2007-1231
